The Gerontocracy Explained
The Gerontocracy
The Gerontocracy is a term for social organizations that are run by a group of elders (typically men) who dominate and exercise control. And America has ranked as number on the Worldwide Age Represenation in Parliaments Dataset for oldest members in power since 2000.
How does this Happen?
The electoral system we have isn't supporting the next generation of politicians to come participate. Older voters are more likely to donate and show up to the polls, so parties have chosen to support candidates the older voters are more likely to favor. It's a safer bet to choose a middle of the road candidate rather than investing in a riskier choice.
Why care?
When the representation doesn't reflect the majority proportion of the population, important topics and issues get ignored that affect the silenced voices. And this directly impact the younger generation's willingness to participate in democracy - America currently has a 40% difference in voting participation between oldest and youngest cohorts. Also, it's a sign that we're not doing enough to support our elederly populaton when Over 33% of the workforce is currently over 65.
